What is National Youth Leadership Training?

NYLT is a six day course, and is built on the legacy of JLT (Junior Leader Training) courses. Through activities, games, presentations, challenges, discussions, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action some of the best that scouting has to offer. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol learns HOW TO on their Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.
The course models a month in the life of a troop, culminating in an overnight outpost camp, which is reached by using GPS orienteering skills the patrols learn from troop guides during the week. Participants will also have the option of participating in a day-long whitewater trip to put their skills to the ultimate test.

Where and How?

The course is held each summer at Camp Bradley, on the Cape Horn Scout Reservation near Stanley, Idaho. The 2012 NYLT course will be held from June 18-23. Cost for the course is $215 for the week, but scouts who sign up before April 2012 will only have to pay $195.
For 2012, we are going to be holding two courses at the same time. One will be held in camp in the traditional troop format, and one will be "NYLT Trails," hiking for a week through the forests of central Idaho.
Some troops, churches, or youth groups may be able to help financially. If a scout is recommended for participation in the course and the troop or youth group cannot assist financially, contact an NYLT representative, as scholarships or other assistance may be available.

Interested in Signing up or want more information?

You can get an official NYLT application form from any staff member or representative, or you can print off and fill out the application from the website. Look for NYLT at scout-o-rama, pow-wow, roundtables, and other scouting events. Additional applications are available at the scout office, from staff members, or from scoutmasters.

SCOUTMASTERS:
If you like the course, and are interested in having scouts from your troop attend, our staff can come and present NYLT to your troop. We can (at your option) show a video about the course, play team games, and answer any questions about the course you or your scouts may have.
