Why Name the Company Be Know Do?
Probably the next question you’d ask me after hearing my “why” for forming another consulting firm is: what the heck is Be Know Do?? Yeah, that’s fair too. For what it’s worth, I’m making an FAQ list as I go, and those two questions will be near the top of the list 🎯
Be Know Do has been the US Army’s core model on leadership for decades. It’s taught in Basic Training, Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) academies, the Officer Candidate School OCS), the Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC), and West Point Military Academy. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Be Know Do is imprinted on millions of service members. Easy to recall, simple on the face of it, but a “you never arrive” growth exercise for every leader.
Like millions before, this model stayed with me starting with my enlisted time in the Army Reserves just before entering ROTC, and it continues today 40 years later. It’s a part of who I am, and I (painfully) know I have to work on all three pillars to be the best I can be. Think of a weight lifter who skips leg day, but embraces fully arm and core days. Out of balance, and it’s noticeable to all around them.
The model is broad enough that it fits so many constructs that the AI tool I use to help me on Be Know Do trips over itself looping stuff back to it. Don’t like how “Be Know Do” rolls off the tongue? Okay, try Identity | Insight | Impact. Too gimmicky? Character | Expertise | Action. Etc, etc.
I’ll be sharing more about how Be Know Do as a company seeks to help others unpack the leadership model. In a literal sense as individual leaders, but also as an operating framework for organizations too. This approach at it’s broadest is a model in its own right. But that’s a topic for a future date.
